DIED.
In Allen, Kansas, Sunday, October 4, 1896, at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. E.R. Marcy, Mrs. Sophia Bailey, aged 67 years, 6 months and 26 days.
Sophia Joyce was born in New Bedford,
Mass, March 8, 1829. Removed in childhood to Ohio where in 1848 she
married John Bailey. In 1864 she, with her family, moved to Michigan
where her husband died December 27, 1869. She came to Kansas in 1889.
Early in life she united with the Congregational church, and in 1875
or 1876 joined the M.E. church, of which she had since been a member.
She was the mother of five children, Mrs. N.E. Marcy, Mrs. A.S. Ledyard
of Rochester, Ohio, Mrs. E.J. Tucker, M.P. Bailey of New London, Ohio, and
Mrs. A.E. Lanenger of Elyria, Ohio, all of whom are living to mourn her loss.
Of these Mrs. Marcy and Mrs. Tucker, living in Allen, were present at her
death and burial.
Mrs. Bailey was stricken with paralysis August 18th last, and had
been confined to her bed for nearly seven weeks since. At one time
there was some improvement in her condition, but the hope was dispelled and
the patient sufferer passed on to her rest.
Funeral services at the M.E. church, Monday at 10 o'clock were attended
by a large number of friends, Rev. William Conrad officiating, after which
the remains were laid reverently away in the Allen cemetery.
The sympathy of the Herald and of our community is with the stricken
relatives one and all.
